Moving during the summer is incredibly common — school is out, the weather is cooperative (most days), and families have more flexibility. But as any seasoned mover knows, a smooth transition takes more than good timing. It takes preparation, planning, and a little patience.

Whether you’re moving across Oklahoma City or to an entirely new city, this ultimate moving checklist will keep you on track from start to finish.

6–8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Declutter Your Home
Go room by room and donate, sell, or toss items you no longer need. The less you move, the easier (and cheaper) it will be.

  • Research Moving Companies or Rental Trucks
Summer is peak moving season. Book early to secure your preferred date.

  • Create a Moving Binder or Digital Folder
Keep estimates, receipts, checklists, and important documents all in one place.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Start Packing Non-Essentials
Begin with off-season clothes, decor, books, and items you won’t need immediately.

  • Label Everything
Clearly mark boxes with the room they belong to and a brief description of the contents.

  • Notify Schools, Employers & Medical Providers
Arrange for records to be transferred and update your contact information.

  • Schedule Utility Transfers
Contact electric, gas, water, internet, and trash providers to schedule shutoff at your old place and setup at your new one.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Update Your Address
Submit a change of address with USPS and update banks, subscriptions, and important contacts.

  • Arrange Childcare or Pet Care for Moving Day
It’s safer (and less stressful!) to have little ones and pets out of the way.

  • Prep a Moving Day Kit
Include snacks, water, cleaning supplies, phone chargers, important documents, and a few basic tools.

1 Week Before Moving Day

  • Confirm Details with Movers or Truck Rental
Double-check the time, location, and contact info.

  • Finish Packing
Leave out only what you’ll need for the last few days and pack your essentials in a suitcase.

  • Clean Your Current Home
Do a deep clean or schedule a professional cleaner — especially if you’re renting or selling.

Moving Day

  • Do a Final Walkthrough
Check all rooms, closets, and cabinets. Don’t forget the attic or garage!

  • Stay Hydrated and Cool
Oklahoma summers are no joke — have plenty of water on hand.

  • Take Inventory
Note any damages or missing items if using professional movers.

After the Move

  • Unpack Essentials First
Kitchen, bathroom, and bedding should be top priority.

  • Explore Your New Neighborhood
Locate the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, school, and park.

  • Say Hello to Neighbors
A simple wave or intro can go a long way in building community.
